Fire Extinguishers: Why they’re important

Fire extinguishers are extremely important. They are the most commonly used item for fire protection. Usually they are the first line of defense when it comes to extinguishing a fire. Fire extinguishers can be small but an important part of the home fire safety plan or workplace. They can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or suppressing it until the fire department arrives. Knowing how to use it is also just as important and is something everyone should be able to do. Knowing the proper way to handle fire extinguishers is necessary if you want to stay safe in any fire emergency situation.

The prompt use of a home extinguisher can smother a small fire before it spreads, but fire extinguishers can be dangerous if you have no knowledge on fire extinguishers and different types of fires. For example you would not fight an electrical fire with a water-based extinguisher. You could end up giving your self an electric shock. A grease fire in a kitchen can be especially dangerous. If you catch it early you may be able to put it out. But if a grease fire gets out of control, it can easily send a kitchen up in flames within three and a half minutes, leaving little time to escape. So the proper fire extinguisher would be and ABC fire extinguisher. A- Is for trash, wood, paper. B- Is for liquids such as oil and gasoline and C- Is for Electrical equipment.
